Joanna Nash
Painter & Art Instructor

Arundel, Québec

Joanna Nash is a formally trained career painter and art instructor. With a Master’s in Arts from McGill, a BFA in Painting from Concordia, and a Certificate in teaching art, she grounds her practice in both rigorous training and a deep painterly tradition. She defines her work as “contemporary, hand-made and unique physical images,” prioritizing an expressive, felt interpretation of subject matter through improvised, responsive methods.

Working primarily in mixed water-based media on paper, her style moves between representation and invention, producing concrete and atmospheric forms that avoid sentimentality in favor of authentic human presence. Her paintings are held in major public and corporate collections including the MRC des Laurentides, Petro-Canada, Imperial Oil, Loto-Québec, Health and Welfare Canada, and Pratt & Whitney. Nash’s passion as a painter is inseparable from place and purpose.

Living deep in the hills overlooking the Rivière Rouge valley, she draws her themes directly from the surrounding elements and events, using her studio as a site to reflect, create, and connect. That commitment extends outward: she collaborated on McGill’s Global Studio project and the Canada Council-funded documentary “Apart but Together”, and her 2025 solo exhibition Ice Stations at the Shelburne County Museum translates firsthand encounters with Alaskan glaciers and Newfoundland icebergs into works that bear witness to climate change and human traces in the Arctic.

Leaving her paintings unframed with pinholes and smudges exposed, she seeks an honest, physical dialogue between artist, material, and viewer. For her discipline, her rootedness, and her conviction that painting can shape how we see and act, Joanna Nash exemplifies a passionate citizen of the Laurentians. website: www.joannanash.com
